Can I get a VA loan with a less-than-honorable discharge?
Sometimes. VA performs a character-of-discharge review for less-than-honorable separations. Honorable conditions are clearly eligible; dishonorable usually is not. Other-than-honorable, bad-conduct (general court-martial), and similar can go either way after VA review.
What this actually means.
The character-of-discharge review looks at the circumstances of the separation, length and nature of service, and any compelling-circumstances factors. The veteran can also pursue a discharge upgrade through their service branch's review board. The COE will reflect VA's eligibility decision. Subject to VA guidelines.
Where this can move.
Service-history records, character-of-discharge review, and surviving-spouse DIC determinations can change VA eligibility. Lender overlays may add to VA's rules.
